Red Cross First Aid

The Red Cross is the premium provider of first aid and CPR courses throughout the world. Its red crest is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world and is the universal symbol of first aid. The Red Cross has a long and proud history dating back over 100 years. Henry Dunant started the Red Cross as he volunteered to help wounded soliders after battle. He later was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Since then the Red Cross has grown to a world renowned organization that’s known for its impartial aid and first aid and water safety programs.

The Red Cross offers a variety of first aid and CPR courses. Its CPR program is guided by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The Red Cross offers the highest standards in CPR and changes its program approximately every 5 years based on guidelines and recommendations from ILCOR. ILCOR also sets the guidelines for first aid and CPR courses with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Lifesaving Society.

The Red Cross has a number of different first aid and CPR courses. Standard first aid and CPR “C” is one of the most comprehensive and popular courses. It is a 16 hour first aid course that includes CPR training and automated external defibrillator (AED) training. At some locations candidates can opt for Standard first aid with CPR “HCP” instead of CPR “C”. Re-certifications are available for standard first aid courses. Emergency first aid and CPR “A” is another popular first aid and CPR course. Candidates in this 8 hour first aid course learn basic rescue techniques for adult victims.  At some locations candidates can opt for a higher level emergency first aid with CPR “C”. Renewal courses are available for emergency first aid and CPR. The Red Cross also offers its own program for childcare and daycare workers. These courses are emergency childcare first aid and standard childcare first aid. Both courses are very similar to both emergency and standard first aid. Re-certs are not available for childcare first aid courses.

The Red Cross also offers standalone CPR courses. The following is a list of the different levels of CPR courses:

  • CPR level “A” and AED – Curriculum focuses on candidates rescuing adult victims.
  • CPR level “B” and AED - Curriculum focuses on candidates rescuing adult and child victims.
  • CPR level “C” and AED - Curriculum focuses on candidates rescuing adult, child and infant victims.
  • Health Care Provider CPR and AED - Curriculum focuses on candidates rescuing adult, child and infant victims using more advanced training and equipment.
